SQL Server Error 208 — Invalid object name
Invalid object name 'dbo.TableName'.
SQL Server parsed your query fine, but the table, view, or synonym you referenced doesn't exist — at least not where it's looking.
Common causes
- Simple typo in the table/view name
- Missing schema prefix, so SQL Server looks in the wrong schema (SELECT * FROM Orders when the table is actually sales.Orders, not dbo.Orders)
- Running the query against the wrong database (right table name, wrong DB context)
- The table genuinely doesn't exist yet — deployment/migration didn't run, or you're pointed at a different environment than you think
- A view or synonym referencing an object that was since renamed or dropped
How to fix it
- Confirm which database you're actually connected to: SELECT DB_NAME().
- Search for the object across schemas: SELECT * FROM sys.tables WHERE name = 'TableName' (also check sys.views and sys.synonyms).
- If it's a schema issue, fully qualify the reference (schema.table) instead of relying on default schema resolution.
- If it's a missing migration, confirm your deployment/migration pipeline actually ran against this environment.
